Delias salvini

Delias salvini is a species of butterfly in the family Pieridae. It was first described by the British entomologist Arthur Gardiner Butler in 1882. The species is endemic to the island of New Britain in the Australasian realm and is named in honour of the English naturalist Osbert Salvin.

Description

The adult male of Delias salvini closely resembles Delias bagoe (synonym eurygania). However, the forewings of D. salvini display a distinctive small, curved, oblique sub‑apical white band on both dorsal and ventral surfaces, replacing the larger sulphur‑yellow patch characteristic of D. bagoe. The underside of the hindwings bears a crimson, tapering sub‑marginal band that is more arched than in related species, with its outer edge running almost parallel to the wing margin. The wingspan (expanse) is reported to be approximately 65 mm; other sources give a range of about 57–62 mm.

Taxonomy

Delias salvini belongs to the genus Delias, which comprises a large group of mostly tropical butterflies. Within the genus, it is placed in the hyparete species group. The binomial authority is Butler, 1882.

Distribution and Habitat

The species is known only from New Britain, an island that forms part of the Bismarck Archipelago in Papua New Guinea. Its restriction to this island makes it an endemic taxon of the Australasian biogeographic realm. Specific habitat preferences have not been extensively documented, but members of the genus Delias typically inhabit forested and sub‑montane environments.

Etymology

The specific epithet salvini commemorates Osbert Salvin (1835–1898), a prominent British ornithologist and naturalist who contributed significantly to the study of Central American fauna.
