Deiyai Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Deiyai) is an administrative regency (kabupaten) located in the Central Papua Province of Indonesia. The regency’s administrative centre is the town of Tigi. It was established in 2008 as a result of the subdivision of the former Paniai Regency and is one of the newer regencies formed during Indonesia’s regional autonomy reforms.
Geography
Deiyai Regency occupies a mountainous area in the central highlands of the island of New Guinea. The terrain is characterized by steep valleys, volcanic soils, and a number of lakes, the most prominent being Lake Tigi (Danau Tigi). The climate is tropical highland, with relatively cool temperatures compared to low‑land Papua and a distinct wet season.
Area and Population
According to the 2020 Census, Deiyai Regency covers an area of approximately 1,600 km² (1,600 square kilometres). The same census recorded a total population of about 62,000 inhabitants, resulting in a low population density typical of Papua’s highland regions. The majority of residents belong to indigenous Papuan ethnic groups, predominantly speakers of the Deiyai language and related dialects.
History
The regency was created under Law No. 6/2008 on the Formation of Deiyai Regency, separating it from the western portion of Paniai Regency. The establishment aimed to improve local governance and public service delivery in a geographically remote part of Papua. Since its creation, the regency has been administered by elected regents and a local council.
Administration
Deiyai Regency is subdivided into several districts (kecamatan). The principal districts include Tigi, Moi, and other smaller administrative units. Each district is further divided into villages (desa) and urban communities (kelurahan). The regency government is headquartered in Tigi, where the regent’s office, council chambers, and central public services are located.
Economy
The local economy is largely subsistence‑based, with agriculture constituting the main livelihood. Staple crops include sweet potato, maize, and cassava, while horticultural products such as vegetables and fruits are cultivated on a smaller scale. Livestock raising (especially pigs and chickens) and small‑scale fishing in Lake Tigi also contribute to household incomes. Commercial activity is limited, with few formal markets and minimal industrial development.
Infrastructure and Services
Road connectivity within Deiyai Regency is limited; most transportation relies on unpaved rural roads and footpaths. The regency is served by a modest network of primary schools and a limited number of health clinics, with more advanced medical and educational facilities located in larger towns of Central Papua. Electricity supply is sporadic, and many communities depend on diesel generators or solar panels.
Demographics and Culture
The population is predominantly indigenous Papuan, practicing a mixture of traditional animist beliefs and Christianity, the latter introduced by missionary activity in the mid‑20th century. Cultural practices include customary land ownership (adat) and communal ceremonies tied to agricultural cycles. The Deiyai language, part of the Trans‑New Guinea language family, is widely spoken alongside Indonesian, the national lingua franca.
