Deinosuchus (from the Greek deinos “terrible” and suchos “crocodile”) is an extinct genus of large, semi‑aquatic crocodyliform that lived during the Late Cretaceous period of North America. It is known from multiple fossil sites and is regarded as one of the largest crocodylian predators that ever existed.

Temporal range
Fossils are dated to the Campanian to Maastrichtian stages of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 80 to 73 million years ago.
Geographic distribution
Specimens have been recovered from a broad area of eastern and central North America, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Montana, and the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The widespread distribution indicates that Deinosuchus inhabited a variety of riverine, estuarine, and coastal environments.
Physical description
- Size: Length estimates range from 8 m to 12 m (26–39 ft); most published reconstructions place adult individuals at about 10 m (33 ft).
- Mass: Body mass estimates vary between 4 t and 8 t.
- Skull: The skull is robust, reaching up to 1.5 m (5 ft) in length, with thick dorsal armor (osteoderms) and a powerful bite force estimated at 18–20 kN, comparable to that of large modern crocodilians.
- Postcranial anatomy: Limb proportions suggest a primarily aquatic lifestyle, though trackways indicate that Deinosuchus could move on land for short distances.
Paleoecology
Deinosuchus occupied the top trophic level in its ecosystems. Bite marks on contemporaneous dinosaur bones (including hadrosaurs and ceratopsians) have been interpreted as evidence of predation or scavenging. Its diet likely also comprised turtles, large fish, and other vertebrates.
Discovery and research history
- The genus was first described by paleontologist Charles W. Gilmore in 1909 based on fragmentary remains from the late Cretaceous deposits of Texas.
- Subsequent finds, especially well‑preserved skull and osteoderm material from the southeastern United States, have refined understanding of its size, phylogenetic placement, and ecological role.
- Notable contributions to its study include work by Robert Thulborn (1970s) and more recent revisions using computed tomography (CT) scanning and biomechanical modeling.
Significance
Deinosuchus is frequently cited as an example of “Cretaceous megacrocodiles,” illustrating the parallel evolution of large predatory reptiles alongside contemporaneous dinosaurs. Its presence demonstrates that apex aquatic predators reached comparable dimensions to the largest terrestrial carnivores of the same era.
