Degesch

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Schädlingsbekämpfung mbH (Degesch) was a German chemical corporation specializing in pest control products. Founded in 1919 as a subsidiary of Degussa, the company became notable for holding the patent on Zyklon, a pesticide later adapted into Zyklon B—a cyanide-based gas used by Nazi Germany for mass murder during the Holocaust.

History

  • Founding and Early Leadership – Degesch was established in 1919 under the ownership of Degussa. Its first director was Nobel laureate Fritz Haber, a prominent chemist who had previously contributed to chemical warfare research during World I【5†L1-L4】.
  • Shareholding (1936) – By 1936, Degussa and IG Farben each owned 42.5 % of Degesch’s shares, while Th. Goldschmidt AG held the remaining 15 %【5†L5-L7】.

Role in World War II

  • Zyklon Production – Degesch manufactured Zyklon, a pesticide that was later modified into Zyklon B. The variant used for extermination lacked the added odorant intended to warn of its toxicity and was supplied to the German Army and the Schutzstaffel (SS) through distributors such as Tesch & Stabenow GmbH (Testa) and Heerdt‑Linger (Heli)【5†L1-L4】【5†L8-L10】.
  • Profits – Between 1938 and 1943, Degesch was extremely profitable; dividends paid to IG Farben during this period were reportedly twice the value of their shareholdings【5†L11-L13】.

Post‑war Period

  • After World War II, Degesch continued its operations in pest control. In 1986 the company was sold to Detia Freyberg GmbH and subsequently renamed Detia‑Degesch GmbH【5†L14-L16】.
  • Legal proceedings linked to the wartime use of Zyklon B involved several Degesch-associated individuals:
    • Gerhard Friedrich Peters, a director, was charged with murder in Frankfurt (1949) and sentenced to five years; his conviction was upheld on appeal in 1952, but he was acquitted in a later 1953 appeal after changes in the law regarding assistance in murder【5†L17-L20】.
    • Hermann Schlosser, chairman from 1939–1945, was arrested in February 1948 and acquitted in April 1948【5†L21-L22】.
    • The owners of Tesch & Stabenow—Bruno Tesch and director Karl Weinbacher—were convicted by a British tribunal and executed on 16 May 1946 for their role in supplying Zyklon B【5†L23-L25】.

Modern Corporate Structure

  • Today the Detia‑Degesch Group operates globally, providing fumigants and pest‑control solutions across Europe, Africa, the Americas, and other regions. The company’s contemporary focus is on stored‑product protection for food and feed industries【5†L0-L2】【5†L9-L10】.

Significance

Degesch is historically significant both for its contributions to chemical pest control and for its involvement in the production of Zyklon B, a key component of Nazi Germany’s genocide machinery. The company’s wartime activities have been extensively documented in historical and legal scholarship, underscoring the ethical implications of scientific research when applied to weapons of mass murder.
