Dean Brooks

Dean Brooks (July 23, 1916 – January 1, 2013) was an American psychiatrist and medical administrator known for his tenure as the director of the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon, and for his cameo appearance in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Early Life and Education

  • Born in Marion, Oregon, United States.
  • Earned a medical degree (M.D.) from the University of Oregon Medical School (now Oregon Health & Science University) in 1942.

Career in Psychiatry

  • Served as a medical officer in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
  • Joined the staff of the Oregon State Hospital in 1945, initially as a staff psychiatrist.
  • Became superintendent (later titled director) of the hospital in 1964, a position he held until his retirement in 1979.
  • Oversaw major reforms at the facility, including efforts to modernize treatment approaches, improve patient conditions, and reduce institutional violence.

Involvement with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

  • While serving as director, Brooks was approached by director Miloš Forman and producer Saul Zaentz to allow the hospital to be used as a filming location for the adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel.
  • Brooks consented to the production and, at the request of the filmmakers, appeared in a brief on‑screen role as “Chief Bromden’s psychiatrist.”
  • His participation contributed to authenticity of the hospital setting and provided the cast and crew with operational guidance during filming.

Later Life and Legacy

  • After retiring from the Oregon State Hospital, Brooks continued to work as a consultant in mental health and remained active in community health initiatives.
  • He was recognized for his advocacy of humane treatment for institutionalized patients and for pioneering patient‑centered approaches within the state’s mental health system.
  • Brooks lived in Salem, Oregon, until his death at age 96 on January 1, 2013.
