DeAndrew Rubin (born December 26, 1979) is a former professional American football player who played as a wide receiver and return specialist. He is best known for his collegiate career at the University of South Florida (USF) and his subsequent professional career in the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Early Life and Collegiate Career
Rubin attended the University of South Florida, where he played for the South Florida Bulls from 1999 to 2002. During his tenure, he became a prominent figure in the program's early history, establishing himself as a significant threat on special teams. He set several school records, particularly in the return game. In 2002, he led the nation in punt return average for much of the season and finished his college career with four punt return touchdowns.
Professional Career
Rubin was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round (253rd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft. He was primarily recognized for his potential as a kick and punt returner due to his speed and agility.
Following his stint with the Packers, Rubin spent time with several other NFL organizations, including the Indianapolis Colts, the Detroit Lions, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His professional career in the United States was characterized by stints on practice squads and off-season rosters.
In 2005, Rubin moved to the Canadian Football League, signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. During his time in the CFL, he continued to serve as a wide receiver and return specialist, utilizing the larger field dimensions common in Canadian football.
Post-Career
After retiring from professional football, Rubin transitioned away from the public eye. He is frequently cited in USF athletics history for his contributions to the development of the football program during its transition to Division I-A (now FBS) status.
