De Nobili School, Sindri is a private Catholic primary and secondary school located in Sindri, in the Dhanbad district of the state of Jharkhand, India. It is one of several De Nobili Schools in the Dhanbad region, which also include De Nobili School, CMRI and De Nobili School, FRI.
History and Founding
The school was founded in 1963 by the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) as a boarding and day school. It prepares students for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) examination in Class 10 and for the Indian School Certificate (ISC) in Class 12.
Namesake
The school is named after Roberto de Nobili (1577–1656), an Italian Jesuit missionary who worked in Madurai, India, during the 17th century. He is noted for being one of the first Europeans to learn Sanskrit and to study the Vedas and Vedanta, and for adopting an inculturation approach to missionary work, presenting himself as a Hindu ascetic (sannyasi) to gain acceptance among local communities.
