Dayton lies in the northwestern portion of the Willamette Valley, approximately 30 mi southwest of Portland and 10 mi east of the Willamette River. Etymology / Origin
The community was originally settled in the 1850s and was known informally as “Hale’s Crossing.” When a post office was established in 1858, the settlement was given the name “Dayton” after Dayton, Ohio. Dayton, Ohio, in turn, was named for Jonathan Dayton, a signer of the United States Constitution. The naming reflects a common practice of early Oregon settlers adopting place names from established Eastern towns.
