Dawakin Kudu is a Local Government Area (LGA) and town in Kano State, northern Nigeria. Its headquarters are located in the town of Dawakin Kudu. The LGA covers an area of 384 km² (148 sq mi) and had a population of 225,389 according to the 2006 census, giving it a density of about 587 inhabitants per km². The overwhelming majority of residents are Hausa people, with Islam practiced by approximately 99.9 % of the population.
Geography
The LGA lies at coordinates 11°50′05″N 8°35′53″E. It shares borders with neighboring LGAs such as Warawa and Kumbotso. The postal code prefix for the area is 713, and its ISO 3166‑2 code is NG.KN.DK.
Economy and Industry
Agriculture forms a core part of the local economy. Major crops cultivated in Dawakin Kudu include rice, groundnuts, millet, and sorghum. The area also has notable pottery production and textile dyeing; it hosts Kano State’s oldest dyeing pit. Several markets operate within the LGA, most prominently the Kwanar Cattle market.
Education
Dawakin Kudu is home to the Dawakin Kudu Science College, an institution noted for producing a significant number of medical doctors, engineers and other professionals who have contributed to science and technology in Kano State.
Administration
The district head (as of 2009) was Dan Iyan Kano Alhaji Yusuf Bayero, with the village head being Sarkin Dawaki Aminu Bala Usman Dawaki. The LGA is subdivided into districts that include Dabakwari, Danbagina, Jido, Kadawa, Tamburawa, Tanagar, Yanfari and Zogarawa.
Climate
The region experiences a tropical savanna climate with a hot season lasting roughly from mid‑March to late May (average daily highs above 37 °C) and a cooler dry season from early December to late January (average lows around 13 °C). Annual temperatures typically range between 12 °C and 39 °C.
