David Tao (born Tao Zhe on July 11, 1969) is a Taiwanese-American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is widely recognized for his influence on the Mandopop industry, particularly for his role in introducing and popularizing R&B and soul music within the genre during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Born in Hong Kong and raised in Taipei and the United States, Tao began his career in the music industry as a producer for other artists. He transitioned to a solo career in 1997 with the release of his self-titled debut album, David Tao. The album was noted for its technical production and the integration of Western musical arrangements with Mandarin lyrics, earning him the Best New Artist and Best Album Producer awards at the 9th Golden Melody Awards.
Tao's subsequent discography includes several commercially and critically successful albums, such as I'm OK (1999), Black Tangerine (2002), and The Great Leap (2005). His work often incorporates a variety of musical genres beyond R&B, including rock, pop, and traditional Chinese folk influences.
