Definition
David Sprüngli (1799 – 1860) was a Swiss confectioner and entrepreneur who co‑founded the confectionery firm David Sprüngli & Son, a predecessor of the modern chocolate manufacturers Lindt & Sprüngli and Confiserie Sprüngli.
Overview
Born on 9 March 1799 in Zürich, Switzerland, Sprüngli began his career as an apprentice in the local pastry trade. In 1836 he opened a modest confectionery shop on Zürich’s Zwinglistrasse, specializing in sweets, pastries, and later, chocolate. In 1845 his son Rudolf Sprüngli‑Ammann joined the business, and the company was renamed David Sprüngli & Son. Under their joint management the firm expanded its product range to include pralines and other chocolate confections, contributing to the growth of Switzerland’s reputation as a centre of high‑quality chocolate production. After David Sprüngli’s death on 9 November 1860, the company continued under the leadership of his descendants, eventually evolving into two distinct entities: Confiserie Sprüngli, which remains a family‑run luxury confectioner, and Lindt & Sprüngli, formed after a merger with the Lindt chocolate company in the early 20th century.
