David Haywood is a British video game designer, developer, and entrepreneur, best known for co-founding the highly successful game development studio Sumo Digital and later establishing Lucid Games. He has played a significant role in the UK video game industry for over three decades, contributing to numerous titles across various platforms.
Haywood began his career in the video game industry in the late 1980s, working on titles for 8-bit and 16-bit home computers. His early experience included roles at studios such as Gremlin Graphics. He gained extensive experience in game design, programming, and production throughout the 1990s, working on a variety of genres.
In 2003, Haywood, along with Carl Cavers, Paul Porter, and James North-Hearn, co-founded Sumo Digital in Sheffield, England. Under their leadership, Sumo Digital grew into one of the largest and most respected independent game developers in the UK, known for its work on major franchises such as OutRun 2, Sega Superstars Tennis, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and numerous contributions to AAA titles for publishers like Microsoft, Sony, and Sega. Haywood served as one of the key creative and technical leaders during his tenure at Sumo Digital, overseeing the development of many successful projects and helping to establish the studio's reputation for high-quality porting, co-development, and original IP creation.
After leaving Sumo Digital, David Haywood went on to co-found Lucid Games in Liverpool in 2011, taking on the role of CEO. Lucid Games quickly established itself, working on projects like Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions and Switchblade. The studio gained significant recognition for developing Destruction AllStars, a PlayStation 5 exclusive, which showcased their expertise in multiplayer action games. Under Haywood's leadership, Lucid Games has continued to grow and innovate within the console and PC game development space.
