Definition
Das Marienleben (German for “The Life of Mary”) is a series of works created by the German Expressionist painter Franz Marc (1880–1916). The series depicts episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary as described in the New Testament and related Christian tradition.
Overview
The series consists of fourteen paintings and several watercolor or ink studies executed between 1911 and 1914. Marc completed the majority of the works shortly before his enlistment in World War I, after which he was killed in action in 1916. The pieces were exhibited posthumously and have since become notable examples of early‑twentieth‑century religious subject matter interpreted through Expressionist aesthetics. Individual works from the series are held by various institutions, including the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt and the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See, as well as by private collectors.
Etymology / Origin
The title combines the definite article das (“the”) with Marienleben, a compound noun formed from Maria (the name Mary) and Leben (“life”). It directly translates to “The Life of Mary,” indicating the series’ narrative focus on events from the Virgin Mary’s life.
Characteristics
- Medium: Predominantly oil on canvas; some studies are in watercolor or ink.
- Style: Expressionist, marked by vivid, non‑naturalistic colour palettes, simplified forms, and a strong emphasis on emotional resonance rather than strict realism.
- Subject Matter: Scenes such as the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, the Crucifixion of Jesus, and the Assumption.
- Composition: Marc often employs flat planes of colour and symbolic shapes to convey spiritual themes, aligning with his broader interest in harmonising nature, humanity, and the divine.
- Reception: At the time of its creation the series was unusual for its modernist treatment of a traditional religious narrative, and it has been discussed in art historical literature as a bridge between avant‑garde expressionism and ecclesiastical iconography.
