Darius Phillips (born March 16, 1995) is an American professional gridiron football player who primarily plays cornerback. He has been a member of National Football League (NFL) teams, most notably the Buffalo Bills, and has also competed as a track and field sprinter at the collegiate level.
Early life and education
Phillips was born in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Central High School in Detroit, where he excelled in both football and track, earning all-state honors as a defensive back and setting school records in the 100‑meter dash.
College career
Phillips enrolled at Western Michigan University, playing for the Western Michigan Broncos football team from 2013 to 2015. As a cornerback, he recorded notable defensive statistics, including multiple interceptions and pass break‑ups, and was recognized with all‑mid‑major conference honors. Concurrently, he competed in track and field, specializing in sprint events and contributing to the university’s relay teams.
Professional football career
- NFL Draft: Phillips declared for the NFL Draft after his junior year and was selected in the fifth round (159th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.
- Buffalo Bills (2016–2021): Phillips contributed on special teams and as a reserve cornerback. He recorded his first career interception in the 2017 season. In 2020, he transitioned to a more regular defensive role, appearing in a career‑high number of defensive snaps.
