Definition
Danny Grossman (born 1946) is a Canadian choreographer and former dancer, recognized for his socially engaged modern dance works and contributions to the development of contemporary dance in Canada.
Overview
Born in New York City, Grossman trained at the Juilliard School and performed with the Martha Graham Company before relocating to Canada in the early 1970s. He co‑founded the Danny Grossman Dance Company (DGDC) in Toronto in 1975, which became a prominent platform for creating and presenting new works that often addressed political, historical, and cultural subjects. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Grossman has choreographed over 150 pieces for his own company, as well as for other ensembles and festivals.
His choreography is noted for blending rigorous modern‑dance technique with narrative and theatrical elements, frequently incorporating commentary on social justice, labor movements, and Canadian identity. Grossman has also been active as an educator, teaching at institutions such as York University and the National Ballet School of Canada.
Among his honors are the Order of Canada (2006) and the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in Dance (2007). The DGDC ceased operations in 2017, after which Grossman continued to work as a freelance choreographer and mentor.
