Definition
Daniel Nash (1790 – 1871) was an American Episcopal priest known for his missionary work among the Oneida people in central New York during the early 19th century.
Overview
Born in Haverhill, New Hampshire, Nash was educated at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1810. He was ordained a deacon in 1815 and a priest in 1818 by the Episcopal Diocese of New York. After serving briefly in parochial positions in New York State, he turned his focus to missionary activity among Native American communities, particularly the Oneida Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy.
From 1821 onward, Nash established several mission stations in the Oneida reservation, most notably at the Owasco and Oneida villages. He conducted regular worship services, provided religious instruction, and promoted literacy through the distribution of Bibles and the establishment of schools. His work contributed to the growth of the Episcopal presence in the region and facilitated cultural exchange between the church and the Oneida people.
Nash retired from active missionary service in the 1850s but remained involved in ecclesiastical affairs until his death in 1871 in New York City.
