Danforth Art

Danforth Art, officially known as the Danforth Art Museum at Framingham State University, is an art museum and an accredited art school located in Framingham, Massachusetts, United States. It serves as a significant cultural institution in the MetroWest region, offering art exhibitions, educational programs, and a studio art school for all ages.

Overview

The museum's collection primarily focuses on American art from the 19th century to the present, with a particular emphasis on regional artists and photography. In addition to its galleries, Danforth Art operates a comprehensive studio art school, providing classes and workshops in various artistic disciplines. The institution plays a dual role as both a public museum and an academic resource for Framingham State University students and faculty.

History

Founded in 1975 as the Danforth Museum of Art, the institution was initially established through a gift from the Framingham community. For decades, it operated as an independent non-profit organization, building its collection and reputation as a regional cultural hub.

In 2016, following financial challenges, the Danforth Museum of Art merged with Framingham State University. This merger led to its renaming as the Danforth Art Museum at Framingham State University. The integration with the university provided the museum with a stable future, enhanced resources, and the opportunity to expand its educational mission by directly engaging with the university's academic programs. The museum moved into a newly renovated building on the university campus in 2017, which previously housed the university's library.

Collections

Danforth Art's permanent collection comprises over 3,000 works. Key areas of focus include:

  • American Art: Spanning from the mid-19th century to contemporary works, featuring painting, sculpture, and works on paper.
  • Regional Artists: A strong representation of artists from New England and the greater Boston area.
  • Photography: A significant collection of photographic works, reflecting various styles and periods.

Notable artists whose works are represented in the collection include Frank Weston Benson, Roy Lichtenstein, Jamie Wyeth, and numerous prominent Massachusetts artists.

Exhibitions

The museum regularly hosts a diverse schedule of temporary exhibitions, showcasing works from its permanent collection, traveling exhibitions, and contemporary artists. These exhibitions often explore themes relevant to American art, social issues, and artistic innovation. Annual juried exhibitions provide opportunities for emerging and established regional artists to display their work.

Education and Programs

A core component of Danforth Art is its Studio Art School, which offers classes, workshops, and camps for children, teens, and adults. Disciplines taught include drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture, printmaking, and photography. The museum also provides educational programs for K-12 schools, tours, lectures, and community events, fostering art appreciation and creative expression within the community. For Framingham State University students, Danforth Art serves as a learning laboratory, providing internships, exhibition opportunities, and direct engagement with professional museum practices.

Location and Affiliation

Danforth Art is located on the campus of Framingham State University at 14 Vernon Street, Framingham, Massachusetts. Its affiliation with the university strengthens its role as both a public museum and an academic institution, contributing to the cultural and educational landscape of the region.
