Dana Al Fardan

Dana Al Fardan (born 29 July 1985) is a Qatari composer, songwriter, and cultural ambassador. She is recognized as the first female Qatari contemporary composer and the first Qatari woman to record and perform songs in English. Her musical style blends contemporary classical, pop, and musical theatre elements with Arabic influences.

Early life and education
Al Fardan was born in Doha, Qatar, the daughter of Ali Al Fardan and Shafiqa Habib, and the eldest of six sisters. She displayed musical talent from a young age, learning keyboard and participating in home musical productions. She earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the American University of Sharjah (UAE) and later obtained a gemology qualification from the Gemological Institute of America in London. Following her studies, she worked in the family business, the Al Fardan Group.

Career
In 2012 Al Fardan shifted her professional focus to music. While pregnant with her daughter Layla, she recorded her debut album Paint, released in November 2013 and produced with the London Metropolitan Orchestra. The album garnered national attention in Qatar.

Subsequent releases include the orchestral album Sandstorm (2017), recorded at Katara Studios and performed with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra at Katara Opera House. In 2018 she co‑wrote and co‑composed the West End musical Broken Wings, an adaptation of Khalil Gibran’s poetic novel, which was staged at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London and later presented in Lebanon, Dubai, and Doha.

Other notable projects include the concert series “Sounds for Qatar” (2019), the musical Rumi (2021) featuring Ramin Karimloo, and collaborations with the AFCENT Band for the Qatar‑USA Year of Culture (2021). Al Fardan has performed internationally, including engagements in London, Moscow, New York, Paris, and at United Nations events.

Activism and philanthropy
Al Fardan is involved in humanitarian initiatives, notably volunteering with the Qatar Red Crescent Society and UN agencies during the 2019 Gaza humanitarian campaign. She composed a song for the “Bring Hope for Gaza” campaign, which was disseminated through UNRWA channels.

Awards and recognition
Her contributions to music and cultural exchange have been recognized with several honors, including the “Woman of the Year” award at the Grazia Style Awards (2017). She is frequently cited as a pioneering figure for women in the Gulf region’s contemporary music scene.
