Definition Dan Shomron (Hebrew: דן שומרון; August 5, 1937 – February 26, 2008) was a distinguished Israeli general who served as the 12th Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from 1987 to 1991.
Overview Born in Kibbutz Ashdot Ya'akov, Dan Shomron joined the IDF in 1956, commencing a military career primarily within the Paratroopers Brigade. He participated in the 1956 Suez Crisis, the 1967 Six-Day War (where he commanded a company and was wounded), and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Shomron rose through the ranks, becoming the Head of the Paratroopers and Infantry Corps in 1974. His most notable command was leading the ground forces in Operation Entebbe in July 1976, a highly successful counter-terrorist hostage rescue mission in Uganda. Following Entebbe, he was appointed head of Southern Command in 1978, a position he held until 1983. In 1987, Shomron was appointed Chief of Staff of the IDF, serving until 1991. During his tenure, the IDF navigated the complexities of the First Intifada. After retiring from military service, Shomron served as the Chairman of the Board of Israel Military Industries. He passed away in 2008.
Etymology/Origin The name "Dan" is a common Hebrew given name meaning "judge." "Shomron" (שומרון) is a Hebrew surname, often referring to the ancient biblical region of Samaria in the northern Land of Israel, or possibly derived from the Hebrew root ש.מ.ר (sh.m.r), meaning "to guard" or "to watch." The surname reflects historical or geographical ties rather than a direct etymological link to the individual's personal history beyond being his family name.
Characteristics General Shomron was widely recognized for his operational expertise, particularly highlighted by his leadership during Operation Entebbe, which showcased his strategic planning and tactical execution capabilities. He was regarded as a pragmatic and decisive military commander who prioritized the effectiveness of military operations. His leadership style combined a focus on practical solutions with a deep understanding of infantry and paratrooper tactics. He commanded the IDF during a period of significant challenges, including internal security issues.
