Early Career and Collegiate Coaching
Ferrigno began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1979. He then moved through various roles at several institutions:
- University of the Pacific (1980-1982): Wide Receivers Coach
- Syracuse University (1983-1990): Wide Receivers Coach, running backs coach, special teams coordinator. He was part of the staff during Syracuse's highly successful period, including an undefeated 1987 season.
- Oregon State University (1991-1994): Offensive Coordinator, Wide Receivers Coach, Special Teams Coordinator.
- University of California, Berkeley (1995-1998): Wide Receivers Coach, Special Teams Coordinator.
- San Jose State University (1999-2000): Assistant Head Coach, Wide Receivers Coach.
- University of Pittsburgh (2001-2004): Wide Receivers Coach, Special Teams Coordinator under head coach Dave Wannstedt.
- Oregon State University (2005-2007): Assistant Head Coach, Wide Receivers Coach, Special Teams Coordinator, returning for a second stint with the Beavers.
Michigan Tenures
Ferrigno had two notable tenures at the University of Michigan:
- 2008-2010: He joined Rich Rodriguez's staff as the Wide Receivers Coach and Special Teams Coordinator.
- 2011-2014: He returned to Michigan under head coach Brady Hoke, continuing in his roles as Wide Receivers Coach and Special Teams Coordinator. During this period, he coached numerous offensive playmakers and was part of the team that won the 2012 Sugar Bowl.
Later Career
Following his second stint at Michigan, Ferrigno continued his coaching career:
- Western Michigan University (2015-2017): Special Teams Coordinator. He contributed to the Broncos' historic 2016 season, which saw them go undefeated in the regular season and earn a spot in the Cotton Bowl.
- San Jose State University (2018-2021): Tight Ends Coach, marking his second tenure with the Spartans.
Coaching Style and Impact
Throughout his extensive career spanning over four decades, Ferrigno has been recognized for his meticulous approach to special teams execution and his ability to develop offensive skill position players. He has coached in numerous bowl games and has been a part of many successful collegiate programs, contributing significantly to the development of countless athletes.
