Damien Sandras

Damien Sandras is a French software engineer best known as a co-founder of the GNOME project, a popular free and open-source desktop environment for Unix-like operating systems.

Born in France, Sandras played a pivotal role in the early development of GNOME, which he initiated in 1997 along with Miguel de Icaza. The project's goal was to create a completely free desktop environment for Linux, providing an alternative to the then-dominant KDE, which relied on the proprietary Qt toolkit. Sandras's work on GNOME heavily leveraged the GTK+ (GIMP Toolkit) library, which he helped refine and adapt for desktop application development.

His contributions were instrumental in shaping the architecture and initial releases of the GNOME desktop, establishing it as a significant force in the free software movement and a widely used interface for millions of users worldwide. After his foundational work on GNOME, Sandras continued to be involved in various aspects of software development and open-source initiatives.
