Dahr Jamail

Dahr Jamail (born 1968) is an American journalist known for his unembedded reporting from Iraq during the 2003 invasion and for his work on climate‑change issues. He has authored several books, contributed to a range of independent media outlets, and received multiple journalism awards.

Biography

Jamail is a fourth‑generation Lebanese American who was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He earned a degree from Texas A&M University and later relocated to Alaska.

Career

War reporting

  • Between 2003 and 2005 Jamail spent eight months in Iraq, reporting independently of U.S. military “embed” programs. His dispatches were published on his website, Dahr Jamail's MidEast Dispatches.
  • He contributed to outlets such as Truthout and Al Jazeera, and appeared frequently on the radio program Democracy Now!

Environmental journalism

  • Since the early 2000s Jamail has written extensively on climate change for Truthout and other progressive platforms.
  • His 2019 book, The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption, blends personal mountaineering narratives with observations of glacial melt and broader climate impacts.

Editing and collaborative projects

  • In 2022 he co‑edited We Are the Middle of Forever: Indigenous Voices From Turtle Island On the Changing Earth with Stan Rushworth, a collection of interviews with Indigenous peoples about environmental change.
