Dagmar Winter (bishop)

Dagmar Winter (born 1963 in Wuppertal) is a German Lutheran theologian and bishop. She is notable as the first woman to serve as Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Schaumburg-Lippe, one of the 20 regional churches within the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

Early Life and Education: Dagmar Winter grew up in Wuppertal, West Germany. She pursued her theological studies at the universities of Wuppertal, Marburg, and Göttingen. After completing her studies, she entered the ministry of the Evangelical Church in Germany.

Career: Winter began her pastoral career in various parishes within the Evangelical Church in Germany. She gained experience in parish work and assumed leadership roles within the church structure. Prior to her election as bishop, she served as Superintendent (a regional dean or superintendent) of the Church District of Hildburghausen-Eisfeld, which is part of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM).

Bishop of Schaumburg-Lippe: On September 29, 2018, Dagmar Winter was elected as the Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Schaumburg-Lippe. Her election marked a historic moment for the regional church, as she became the first woman to hold this highest office. She was officially consecrated and installed as bishop on November 24, 2018, in a ceremony held in the Stadtkirche St. Martini in Stadthagen. In her role, she is responsible for the spiritual leadership and administration of the Schaumburg-Lippe church, representing it within the broader EKD and in ecumenical contexts.
