Daejeon Metro

Overview
The Daejeon Metro (대전도시철도) is the rapid transit system serving Daejeon, the fifth‑largest metropolitan city in South Korea. It is operated by the Daejeon Metropolitan Express Transit Corporation (대전도시철도공사) and is commonly referred to as the Daejeon Subway.

History

• Planning for a subway system in Daejeon began in the early 1990s to alleviate traffic congestion and support the city’s role as a national science and research hub.
• Construction of the first line started in 1997.
• The inaugural segment of Line 1 opened on 16 March 2006, making Daejeon the fourth Korean city after Seoul, Busan, and Daegu to operate a subway system.

Lines

• Line 1 runs north‑south, connecting the Panam district in the north to Banseok in the south. Key stations include Daejeon‑euk in the central business district and the Daejeon Government Complex.

Rolling Stock

• The system uses 20‑meter‑long, 8‑car electric multiple units (EMUs) built by Hyundai Rotem.

Operations

• Service hours generally run from 05:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., with peak‑hour frequencies of 5–7 minutes and off‑peak intervals of 8–10 minutes.
