DDD (Koda Kumi song)

D.D.D. (also written as DDD) is a song by Japanese recording artist Koda Kumi, featuring guest vocals from the R&B/hip-hop duo SOULHEAD. It was released on December 21, 2005, by the record label rhythm zone (a sub-label of Avex Group) as Koda Kumi's twenty-first physical single and the third entry in her "12 Singles Collection" project, a series of monthly releases leading up to her greatest hits album Best ~second session~ (2006).

Background and Composition

The song was written by SOULHEAD members Yoshika and Tsugumi, with production, arrangement, and programming handled by OCTOPUSSY. Guitar was performed by Masanobu Fukuhara. The track is a dance-pop/R&B number with hip-hop influences, featuring lyrics divided between Japanese and English, with Koda Kumi and SOULHEAD alternating verses in a call-and-response structure. The title "D.D.D." is an abbreviation for "triple diamond," evoking themes of luxury and rarity.

The collaboration originated when Avex approached SOULHEAD for a joint track, which they accepted due to their admiration for Koda Kumi. It represented Koda's first major collaboration since her single "Hot Stuff" with rapper KM-MARKIT, released a month earlier. The song drew melodic inspiration from the 2001 remake of "Lady Marmalade" produced by Missy Elliott and Rockwilder.

Release and Formats

The single was issued as a limited-edition CD maxi-single capped at 50,000 copies, priced at ¥500, and included two tracks: the vocal version (4:15) and an instrumental (4:13). A digital download edition and a rental edition were also made available. In South Korea, the single was distributed on December 29, 2005, through S.M. Entertainment. The cover art depicts Koda Kumi in a black mini-dress and headdress, drawing on British punk aesthetics and the symbolic figure of Britannia, reflecting the single's thematic inspiration from the United Kingdom.

Commercial Performance

"D.D.D." debuted at number 5 on Japan's Oricon Weekly Singles Chart, selling approximately 43,000 units in its first week. It remained on the chart for five weeks, accumulating total sales of 48,036 units, and was ranked the 188th best-selling single of 2006 in Japan. The song was also featured in a 2006–2007 Suzuki commercial for the Chevy "MW" resale model.

Music Video

The music video was directed by Ryuji★Seki and features Koda Kumi alongside SOULHEAD performing dance routines in a cave setting, interspersed with solo segments in jail cell environments. The styling incorporates punk-rock elements such as leather accents and metallic chains. The video was later included on the Koda Kumi Single Collection: Best DVD compilation released in 2007.

Legacy

"D.D.D." has been a staple in Koda Kumi's live performances, appearing in tours such as KODA KUMI LIVE TOUR 2006–2007 second session, KODA KUMI LIVE TOUR 2013 JAPONESQUE, and the a-nation '20 festival. Multiple remixes and live renditions appear in her discography, including versions from Dirty Ballroom (2007) and Pink Chameleons (2008). The song also earned a best collaboration award alongside SOULHEAD's "Pray / XXX."
