Cyril Chamberlain

Cyril Chamberlain (March 8, 1909 – December 5, 1974) was an English character actor who appeared in over 140 British films and television productions between 1938 and 1966. He was a frequent performer in mid-20th-century British cinema, often cast in supporting roles such as police officers, military personnel, and working-class officials.

Chamberlain is best known as a regular member of the early Carry On film ensemble. He appeared in the first nine films of the series, starting with Carry On Sergeant (1958) and concluding his involvement with Carry On Cleo (1964). His roles in the franchise were typically grounded "straight man" characters that provided a foil to the more eccentric lead performers.

Beyond the Carry On series, Chamberlain’s filmography includes several notable British productions:

  • The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)
  • Doctor in the House (1954)
  • A Night to Remember (1958)
  • The Bulldog Breed (1960)

His television career was also extensive, featuring guest appearances in series such as Dixon of Dock Green, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and The Vise. Chamberlain retired from the acting profession in the mid-1960s and moved to Wales, where he died in 1974.
