Cyangugu (formerly Shangugu) is a city in the Western Province of Rwanda, serving as the capital of Rusizi District. Situated at the southern extremity of Lake Kivu, the city lies on the Ruzizi River, which forms the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and separates Cyangugu from the Congolese city of Bukavu. Two bridges and a dam span the river, facilitating cross‑border movement.
Geography and Administration
The urban area comprises two main sections: the lakeside district of Cyangugu, characterized by low‑density residential development, and Kamembe, an inland district that functions as the industrial and transport hub. Kamembe Airport, located within the city’s boundaries, provides scheduled air service to Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, operated by RwandAir.
Population
According to the 2022 national census, Cyangugu had a total population of 43,866 inhabitants.
Climate
The city experiences a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw). Average monthly temperatures range from 22 °C to 27 °C, with the warmest month (March) reaching record highs of 32.3 °C. Annual precipitation totals approximately 1,327 mm, with a marked wet season from March to May and a pronounced dry season in July and August.
Economy and Infrastructure
Cyangugu’s economy is closely linked to its border location, serving as a conduit for trade between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The presence of bridges and the airport supports both commercial and passenger traffic. Kamembe’s industrial zone hosts manufacturing, logistics, and service enterprises.
Tourism and Environment
The city is a gateway to Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Rwanda’s last remaining montane rainforests, renowned for its biodiversity, including chimpanzees and a variety of primate species. The proximity to Lake Kivu also promotes fishing, water sports, and lakeside recreation.
Transportation
In addition to air links via Kamembe Airport, Cyangugu is connected by a network of paved roads linking it to Kigali and other major Rwandan cities. The Ruzizi River bridges facilitate vehicular and pedestrian crossing to Bukavu, enhancing regional connectivity.
