Curved Air is a British progressive rock band formed in London in 1970. The group is noted for its fusion of classical music elements—particularly violin—and rock, as well as for incorporating jazz and folk influences into its sound.
History
- Formation and early lineup (1970): The band was founded by violinist Darryl Way and vocalist Sonja Kristina. Early members also included guitarist and keyboardist Francis Monkman, bassist Mike Wedgwood, and drummer Florian Pilkington-Miksa.
- Debut album (1970): Their first studio album, Air Conditioning, was released in September 1970 on Warner Bros. Records. The record reached No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart and featured the single “It’s Only a Matter of Time,” which peaked at No. 21 on the UK Singles Chart.
- Subsequent releases (1971–1973): Curved Air issued Second Album (1971), which entered the UK Top 20, followed by Phantasmagoria (1972) and Air Cut (1973). These releases continued to explore complex arrangements and eclectic instrumentation.
- Lineup changes and hiatus (1973–1975): After the departure of Monkman in 1972 and the subsequent exit of Way in 1973, the band’s lineup underwent several alterations. Curved Air disbanded in 1975.
- Reformations: The group reconvened in 1977 with a revised roster, producing the album Midnight Wire (1978). Another reformation occurred in the early 1990s, leading to the release of Reborn (1991) and Live Atmosphere (1992). A further revival in the 2000s resulted in the live album Curved Air – Live (2002) and the studio record North Star (2014). As of the early 2020s, Sonja Kristina remains the sole continuous member, with the band performing occasional live dates.
Musical style and influence
Curved Air’s music is characterized by the prominent use of electric violin, complex time signatures, and a blend of symphonic and rock textures. Their approach contributed to the development of progressive rock in the United Kingdom and has been cited as an influence by later artists exploring genre hybridization.
