Overview

The Culebras District is one of the five districts that make up the Huarmey Province in the Áncash Region of Peru. It is situated along the central coast of Peru, with its administrative center located in the town of Culebras. The district is primarily known for its coastal geography, fishing industry, and quiet beaches.

History

The district was established on November 21, 1914, separating from the former Huarmey District to form its own administrative entity within what was then the Santa Province, and later incorporated into the newly created Huarmey Province. Its history is closely tied to the development of the fishing industry along the Peruvian coast.

Geography

  • Location: Culebras District is located on the Pacific coast of Peru, in the southern part of the Áncash Region. It borders the Pacific Ocean to the west, other districts of Huarmey Province to the north and east, and the Casma Province to the south.
  • Terrain: The landscape is predominantly characterized by arid coastal desert, interspersed with small valleys where seasonal rivers or intermittent streams flow towards the ocean. It features a significant stretch of coastline with beaches and coves. Inland areas consist of dry hills and mountains characteristic of the Peruvian coastal range.
  • Climate: The district experiences an arid coastal climate, typical of the Peruvian desert. Temperatures are generally mild year-round with low humidity, and precipitation is extremely scarce. The Humboldt Current moderates temperatures, preventing extreme heat despite its low latitude.

Demographics

  • Population: According to the 2017 national census conducted by INEI (Peru's National Institute of Statistics and Informatics), the Culebras District had a population of 1,600 inhabitants. It is one of the less populated districts in the region.
  • Main Settlement: The capital, Culebras, is the primary urban and administrative center, housing the majority of the district's population and essential services. Other smaller settlements are typically fishing villages or agricultural hamlets.

Economy

The economy of Culebras District is largely driven by its natural resources and coastal location:

  • Fishing: Artisanal and industrial fishing are the cornerstone of the local economy. The Pacific Ocean provides abundant marine resources, supporting a significant portion of the workforce.
  • Agriculture: Limited agricultural activity takes place in the small irrigated valleys, primarily focused on subsistence farming and local markets.
  • Tourism: The district's beaches and coastal scenery attract visitors, particularly during the summer months (December to March), contributing to a growing tourism sector.

Administration

The district is governed by a municipal council, headed by a mayor (''alcalde'') who is elected for a four-year term. The mayor and the council are responsible for local public services, infrastructure, and development initiatives within the district. Culebras District is part of the larger administrative framework of the Huarmey Province and the Áncash Regional Government.

Points of Interest

  • Beaches: The district is known for its relatively untouched and quiet beaches, offering opportunities for relaxation and water sports.
  • Fishing Coves: The traditional fishing coves provide insight into the local culture and livelihood.
