David Wallace Crowder (born September 19 1982), known mononymously as Crowder, is an American contemporary Christian singer‑songwriter, worship leader, and musician. He first gained prominence as the frontman of the David Crowder Band, a Christian worship group active from 1998 to 2012, before launching a solo career under the name Crowder in 2012.
Early life and education
Crowder was born in Waco, Texas. He grew up in a Christian household and began playing music at a young age, learning piano and guitar. He attended Texas A&M University, where he studied agriculture, but left to pursue music full‑time.
Career
David Crowder Band (1998–2012)
Formed while Crowder was a student at Texas A&M, the band blended folk, electronic, and rock elements with worship lyrics. Their debut album, Can You Hear Us? (2002), achieved moderate success within the Christian music market. Subsequent releases—including A Collision (2005), Remedy (2007), Church Music (2009), and Neon Steeple (2011)—earned critical acclaim and multiple Gospel Music Association Dove Award nominations. The band disbanded in 2012.
Solo work (2012–present)
Crowder's solo debut, Neon Steeple, was released in November 2014 on sixstepsrecords and Sparrow Records. The album incorporated folk‑rock, bluegrass, and electronic influences, and produced the single “I Am Ready,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart. Neon Steeple received the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album (2015).
His follow‑up album, American Sundream (2019), continued his genre‑blending approach and featured the hit single “All My Eyes.” In 2022, Crowder released Milk & Honey, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart and included collaborations with artists such as Tasha Cobbs Leonard and One Sonic Society.
