Crinolamia

Crinolamia is a genus of marine gastropod mollusks belonging to the family Eulimidae. Species in this genus are parasitic or commensal sea snails that are typically associated with echinoderm hosts, a characteristic feature of many eulimid taxa.

Taxonomic classification

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Mollusca
  • Class: Gastropoda
  • Clade: Caenogastropoda
  • Superfamily: Eulimoidea
  • Family: Eulimidae
  • Genus: Crinolamia

Authority
The genus was established by malacologist Anders Warén in the early 1980s (Warén, 1981).

Morphology
Members of Crinolamia possess elongated, smooth, and glossy shells that are generally small (typically less than 10 mm in length). The aperture is elongate, and the outer lip is thin. Shell sculpture is minimal, lacking prominent ribs or axial cords, which distinguishes the genus from other eulimid genera that often display more pronounced ornamentation.

Ecology and host relationships
Like most eulimids, Crinolamia species are ectoparasites or commensals of echinoderms, particularly sea stars and sea urchins. They attach to the host’s external surfaces or insert a proboscis into host tissues to feed on bodily fluids. Specific host records are limited in the literature, and further research is required to delineate host specificity for individual species.

Geographic distribution
Species of Crinolamia have been reported from deep‑water benthic habitats in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas. Recorded depths range from the continental shelf to several hundred meters, reflecting the genus’s adaptation to cold, high‑pressure environments.

Recognized species
The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) currently lists the following species within the genus Crinolamia:

  • Crinolamia crassa (Warén, 1981)
  • Crinolamia pilosa (Bouchet & Warén, 1979)

(Additional species may exist, but comprehensive revisionary work on the genus is limited.)

Research and taxonomy
The genus Crinolamia is of interest to malacologists studying host‑parasite coevolution and deep‑sea biodiversity. Molecular phylogenetic analyses have begun to incorporate Crinolamia specimens to resolve relationships within the Eulimidae, but data remain sparse.
