Crew (company)

Crew was a technology company based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The company developed, marketed, and operated the Crew app, a platform that connected individuals with freelance graphic designers, illustrators, and software developers. Freelancers on the Crew platform completed projects for companies including Dropbox, Medium, Tinder, Eventbrite, and IDEO.

In addition to its freelancer marketplace, Crew operated Unsplash, a photography website where users could submit copyright-free photography. As of 2016, over 40,000 photographers had submitted original photos to Unsplash.

Crew was founded by Mikael Cho, Angus Woodman, Stephanie Liverani, and Luke Chesser. The company originally launched in April 2014 under the name "Oomf" before rebranding to Crew, and raised $2.1 million in seed funding at that time.

In April 2017, Crew was sold to Dribbble, a design community platform, as the co-founders shifted their focus to developing Unsplash.

Note on naming ambiguity: There is also a separate, unrelated company named Crew (crewapp.com), a San Francisco-based frontline employee communication platform founded in 2015 by Danny Leffel and Broc Miramontes, which was acquired by Square (now Block, Inc.) in July 2021. Additionally, crew.inc is an unrelated AI-powered HRMS platform based in India. The Wikipedia article and this entry refer specifically to the Montreal-based freelancer marketplace company.
