Location and Structure
The station is situated at 1400 East 233rd Street (New York State Route 144), adjacent to the intersection with Westchester Avenue (U.S. Route 9). It comprises two high‑level side platforms, each capable of accommodating ten‑car trains. The platforms are accessed via stairways, ramps, and a pedestrian underpass that connects the northbound and southbound platforms. A small station house on the southbound side offers a waiting area and ticket vending machines. Parking facilities, including both permit‑required and metered spaces, are located on the east side of the tracks.
History
Crestwood station opened in 1846 as part of the New York and Harlem Railroad, which later became a component of the New York Central Railroad system. The original wooden depot was replaced in the early 20th century with the current brick structure, which underwent substantial renovation in 2003 to improve accessibility and modernize passenger amenities. Service has been operated by Metro‑North Railroad since the creation of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in 1968.
Service Pattern
During weekday peak periods, Crestwood receives approximately 15 to 20 northbound and southbound trains per hour, with reduced frequencies on weekends. All Harlem Line local and limited‑stop trains stop at the station; express services generally bypass it. The average weekday ridership, as reported by the MTA for 2022, was about 2,300 boardings.
Connections and Accessibility
The station is served by several Westchester County bus routes that provide connections to local residential areas and commercial centers. It is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), offering ramps, tactile warning surfaces, and audible announcements. Bicycle racks are also provided near the station entrances.
Surrounding Area
The Crestwood neighborhood is primarily residential, featuring single‑family homes and small commercial strips along Westchester Avenue. Nearby amenities include the Crestwood Library, local schools, and several parks, notably Riverside Park along the Bronx River.
Future Developments
Plans announced by the MTA in 2024 include a modest upgrade to the station’s lighting and signage, as well as the installation of an additional electrical sub‑station to support increased train frequencies on the Harlem Line. No major reconstruction projects have been scheduled.
