Etymology
The township was named by pioneer settler [[Thomas Armytage]] after the [[Battle of Crécy]], a significant engagement of the [[Hundred Years' War]] fought in 1346. Armytage established a large pastoral run in the area, which he also named "Cressy".History
The area around Cressy was first settled by Europeans in the late 1830s. Thomas Armytage established his "Cressy" pastoral run in 1839, leveraging the rich volcanic soils and reliable water from the Barwon River, which made the area highly attractive for agriculture, particularly sheep grazing. While a town site was officially proclaimed in 1840, significant development was initially slow. A Post Office opened in Cressy on 1 January 1858. The Cressy Hotel, a prominent landmark, was established in 1856 and continues to operate. The arrival of the railway line in 1884 further cemented Cressy's role as a service centre for the surrounding agricultural district. This railway line, connecting Cressy to Colac and ultimately to Geelong and Melbourne, greatly facilitated the transport of wool, grain, and other produce to markets, as well as bringing goods and people to the town.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Cressy developed as a vital hub for wool production and general mixed farming. The town's population and prosperity have historically fluctuated with agricultural fortunes and technological changes in farming.
