Common names
No widely accepted common name has been recorded in the primary literature; the species is generally referred to by its scientific name.
Description
Crenicichla igara is a medium‑sized pike‑cichlid. Adult specimens reach a standard length of approximately 12–15 cm (4.7–5.9 in). The body is elongate and laterally compressed, typical of the genus. The coloration consists of a series of irregular dark bars or blotches on a lighter background, with a relatively pale ventral surface. Detailed meristic counts (e.g., dorsal‑fin rays, lateral‑line scales) conform to the diagnostic characters used to separate it from closely related Crenicichla species.
Distribution and habitat
The species is endemic to South America. Verified records place C. igara in the upper Paraná River basin, particularly in tributaries of the Iguazú River system within the Brazilian and Argentinean portions of the basin. It inhabits freshwater environments with moderate to slow currents, often associated with rocky or sandy substrates and submerged vegetation.
Ecology and behavior
As with other members of the genus, C. igara is a predatory fish, principally feeding on smaller fish and aquatic invertebrates. Observations of captive specimens indicate an ambush predation strategy, relying on rapid bursts of speed to capture prey. Reproductive behavior aligns with typical cichlid parental care: females lay adhesive eggs on a chosen substrate, after which one or both parents guard the brood until the fry become free‑swimming.
Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Crenicichla igara; consequently, its conservation status is currently listed as “Data Deficient.” Habitat alteration due to dam construction and agricultural runoff in the Paraná basin may pose potential threats, but specific impact assessments are lacking.
Etymology
The specific epithet “igara” is believed to derive from the Guarani word îgara, meaning “fish” or “creature of the water,” reflecting the species’ native region where Guarani languages are spoken. The original description did not provide an explicit etymological note.
