Common name

  • Often referred to as “acrobat ants” because of their ability to raise their abdomen over the thorax when disturbed.

Morphology

  • Nuptial flights are typically synchronized with seasonal rain patterns in tropical regions.

  • Species that inhabit plant domatia can provide defensive benefits to their host plants, reducing herbivory.
  • In some regions, their nesting behavior can cause minor structural damage to wooden structures, but they are not considered major pest ants.
