Authority
The species was originally described under the name Pleurotoma nodulosa by L. A. Reeve in 1843. Subsequent taxonomic revisions transferred it to the genus Crassispira, where it is currently placed.
General description
Crassispira nodulosa is a marine gastropod mollusk. Like other members of the family Pseudomelatomidae, it possesses an elongate, turreted shell with a well‑defined siphonal canal. The specific epithet “nodulosa” refers to the presence of nodular sculpturing on the whorls of the shell, a characteristic feature noted in the original description. Detailed morphometric data (shell length, coloration, aperture features) are not widely reported in accessible literature.
Distribution and habitat
Published records indicate that C. nodulosa occurs in tropical to subtropical marine waters, but precise geographic range and depth distribution are not consistently documented. Reports place it in the Western Atlantic region, including Caribbean localities, although verification from recent surveys is limited.
Ecology
As a predatory conoidean, C. nodulosa is presumed to be carnivorous, feeding on smaller invertebrates using a toxoglossan radula, a common trait of the family. Specific ecological interactions, prey preferences, and reproductive biology have not been detailed in the primary literature.
Conservation status
No assessment of Crassispira nodulosa has been published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Consequently, its conservation status remains un evaluated.
Remarks
The taxonomic placement of C. nodulosa has been relatively stable since its transfer to Crassispira. However, some malacological works list it as a synonym of related Crassispira species, reflecting ongoing revisions within the group. Further examination of type material and molecular analyses may clarify its distinctiveness.
