Craig Zadan (March 31 1951 – August 20 2018) was an American film, television, and Broadway producer, as well as a screenwriter. He is best known for co‑founding the production company Meron and Zadan with Neil Meron and for producing high‑profile adaptations of stage musicals for the screen.
Overview
Born in Los Angeles, California, Zadan began his career in the 1970s as a screenwriter and journalist, contributing to publications such as The Los Angeles Times and The New‑York Times. In the early 1980s he shifted focus to television production, creating a series of successful TV movies, miniseries, and live‑event specials.
In 1990 Zadan and Meron formed their independent production firm, Meron and Zadan, which quickly became a leading source of televised specials (including the Academy Awards and the Tony Awards broadcasts) and feature‑film adaptations of Broadway hits. Their most celebrated film productions include:
- Chicago (2002) – an adaptation of the 1975 Broadway musical that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
- Hairspray (2007) – a musical comedy film based on the 2002 Broadway production.
- The Music Man (2022) – a filmed stage version of the classic musical (released posthumously).
Zadan also served as an executive producer on the television series American Idol and produced numerous television specials celebrating musical theatre and popular culture. He was known for his ability to translate theatrical works to a cinematic format while retaining their musical integrity.
Zadan died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 67.
