Courtney Thorne‑Smith (born 25 November 1967) is an American actress and former fashion model. She is best known for her television roles as Alison Parker on the sitcom Melrose Place (1993–1997), Alison on the comedy series Ally McBeal (1998–2002), and Lauren on the sitcom according to Jim (2001–2009). Thorne‑Smith has also appeared in a number of films and made guest appearances on various television programs.

Thorne‑Smith was born in San Francisco, California, to Richard and Gwyneith Thorne‑Smith. She attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she studied political science before pursuing a career in acting.
Career
Thorne‑Smith began her career as a teen model, appearing in print advertisements and television commercials. Her first credited television role was a guest appearance on The Equalizer (1986). She gained wider recognition with her role as Allison Parker in the Fox drama Melrose Place, appearing in 62 episodes over four seasons. In 1998, she joined the cast of Ally McBeal as Lauren, a character who became a regular fixture until the series concluded in 2002.
Following Ally McBeal, Thorne‑Smith starred as Lauren in the CBS sitcom According to Jim, where she played the wife of the titular character, Jim (played by Jim Belushi). The series ran for eight seasons, and Thorne‑Smith appeared in 110 episodes.
