Coulonces is a former [[commune of France|commune]] in the [[Calvados]] department in the [[Normandy]] region of north-western [[France]]. On 1 January 2017, it was merged into the new commune of [[Vire Normandie]]. The former commune of Coulonces now functions as a commune déléguée (delegated commune) within Vire Normandie.
Geography
Coulonces is situated in the south-western part of the Calvados department, approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) east of [[Vire]], the main town of its former canton. The area is part of the Bocage Virois, a distinctive rural landscape characterized by rolling hills, hedgerows (bocage), and numerous small valleys carved by streams flowing towards the [[Vire (river)|Vire River]]. Its terrain is typical of the pre-Bocage area, with a mix of agricultural land and wooded patches.History
The history of Coulonces, like many communes in the region, is deeply rooted in agriculture. Its name may have Gallo-Roman origins, possibly related to "Colonia" (a settlement) or a local landowner's name. For centuries, the local economy was dominated by farming and small-scale rural industries. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, like many small communes across France, Coulonces faced administrative and economic pressures that encouraged mergers. This trend led to the creation of communes nouvelles (new communes), designed to consolidate resources and services.
On 1 January 2017, Coulonces officially ceased to be an independent commune. It merged with six other communes—[[Noyers-Bocage]], [[Roullours]], [[Saint-Germain-de-Tallevende-la-Lande-Vaumont]], [[Truttemer-le-Grand]], [[Vaudry]], and the former commune of [[Vire]]—to form the commune nouvelle of [[Vire Normandie]]. Under this new structure, Coulonces maintains a local identity as a commune déléguée, with a delegated mayor and local services managed under the larger Vire Normandie municipal council.
Demographics
The population of Coulonces fluctuated significantly over its history as an independent commune. After a period of decline common to many rural French areas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the population saw a resurgence in the latter half of the 20th century, benefiting from proximity to Vire.| Year | Population |
|---|---|
| 1793 | 1,000 |
| 1901 | 650 |
| 1962 | 426 |
| 1999 | 650 |
| 2014 | 744 |
| (Population figures are based on official French census data; 2014 was the last census taken before the merger.) |
Administration
Prior to its merger, Coulonces was administered by a municipal council and a mayor. It was part of the [[canton of Vire]] and the [[arrondissement of Vire]]. Following the merger, administrative functions are centralized in Vire Normandie, though a delegated mayor represents Coulonces at the local level.Culture and Heritage
