Cornelius Roosevelt (November 30 1794 – February 12 1871), also known as Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt, was an American merchant, financier, and philanthropist, and a prominent member of the Roosevelt family of New York. He is chiefly remembered as the paternal grandfather of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.
Early life and family background
Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt was born in New York City to James Jacobus Roosevelt (1759‑1840), a successful merchant, and Maria Van Schaack (1763‑1828). The Roosevelt family traced its lineage to early Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam, and by the late eighteenth century had become part of the New York commercial elite.
Business career
After completing his education, Roosevelt entered the family dry‑goods and hardware business. In 1824 he became a partner in the firm that would later operate as Roosevelt & Son, a New York–based wholesale merchandise and later securities house. Under his leadership the firm expanded its activities into banking and investment services, establishing connections with early American railroads and utility enterprises.
Roosevelt also served on the boards of several New York financial institutions, including the Bank of New York and the Chemical Bank, where he was a director during the 1850s. His business activities contributed to the accumulation of substantial family wealth that would later support the political careers of his descendants.
Philanthropy and civic involvement
A member of New York’s philanthropic circles, Roosevelt contributed to charitable causes such as the New York Orphan Asylum and the St. Luke’s Hospital. He was an early supporter of the American Museum of Natural History, providing both financial donations and a personal art collection.
Personal life and descendants
In 1820, Roosevelt married Margaret Barnhill (1799‑1867). The couple had several children, the most notable being:
- Theodore Roosevelt Sr. (1831‑1878), a philanthropist and businessman who married Mittie Halsted and fathered President Theodore Roosevelt.
- James Roosevelt (1828‑1900), who fathered James H. Roosevelt, a New York state legislator.
Through these lines, Cornelius Roosevelt became the progenitor of a political dynasty that included President Theodore Roosevelt, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt (distant cousin).
Death and legacy
Cornelius Roosevelt died on February 12 1871 in New York City. He was interred at the Grace Church Cemetery in Jamaica, Queens. His business acumen and philanthropic activities laid a financial foundation that enabled subsequent generations of Roosevelts to pursue public service at the national level.
