Cormack Field House (also known as "The Pit") is the track and field facility for the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Keydets, located in Lexington, Virginia.
Overview
The facility was originally built in the 1930s and served as VMI's home for basketball until 1981, when Cameron Hall was completed as the new VMI basketball arena. After basketball moved out, the building was repurposed as a dedicated track and field venue.
Naming
The field house was renamed in 1986 in honor of Walt B. Cormack, the legendary VMI track coach who guided the Keydets for 25 years. Cormack also founded the "Winter Relays," a renowned indoor track meet that gained national recognition.
Nickname
The building is nicknamed "The Pit," a moniker that originated during its years as VMI's basketball arena, referring to the intimate, sunken configuration of the playing surface that gave it a pit-like atmosphere for spectators and opposing teams.
Current Use
Today, Cormack Field House continues to serve as an outstanding training and competition site for VMI's winter track season, providing indoor track and field facilities for the Keydets.
