Copeville is a city located in Morris County in the northeastern part of the state of Texas, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 1,084 residents. The community is situated approximately 20 miles north of the city of Daingerfield and about 30 miles east of the larger city of Atlanta, Texas.
Geography
Copeville lies at latitude 33.1065° N and longitude 94.9018° W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city encompasses a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²), all of which is land. The region is characterized by gently rolling terrain typical of the Piney Woods area of East Texas.
History
The settlement that would become Copeville was founded in the early 20th century, with the arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway contributing to its development. The town was named after John Cope, an early settler and landowner in the area. Incorporation as a city occurred in 1915. Throughout much of its history, Copeville’s economy has been based on agriculture, particularly cotton and later dairy farming, as well as timber-related industries.
