Location
Conway Island lies in Crates Bay on the west side of Lens Peak, facing Bregare Point, off the northeast coast of Stresher Peninsula on Graham Land in Antarctica. Its coordinates are approximately 66°08′ S, 65°28′ W【7†L1-L3】.
Discovery and Mapping
The island was photographed by Hunting Aerosurveys Ltd during aerial surveys conducted in 1956–57. These photographs were later used by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) to produce detailed maps of the area【7†L1-L2】.
Naming
In 1959, the United Kingdom Antarctic Place‑Names Committee (UK‑APC) named the feature after Martin Conway, 1st Baron Conway of Allington. He was an English mountaineer and a pioneer of polar skiing, noted for his crossing of Vestspitsbergen in 1896【7†L2-L3】.
