Description
Conus gradatus is a marine gastropod mollusk characterized by a conical shell that typically ranges from 30 to 55 mm in length. The shell exhibits a graduated spire with whorls that increase in size successively, giving it a stepped appearance. Its coloration varies from light tan to brownish‑gray, often with darker spiral bands or mottling. The aperture is narrow, and the outer lip is smooth. Like other members of the genus Conus, the animal possesses a specialized radular tooth capable of delivering venom.

Distribution and habitat
This species is found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, with a range extending from the Gulf of California (including Baja California) southward along the coasts of Mexico, Central America, and into northern Peru. C. gradatus inhabits sandy or rubble substrates in shallow marine environments, from the intertidal zone to depths of approximately 30 m.

Biology and ecology

  • Feeding: Conus gradatus is a predatory snail that hunts primarily marine polychaete worms. It uses a harpoon‑like radular tooth to inject a complex venom cocktail that immobilizes prey.
  • Reproduction: Like other cone snails, it is gonochoric (separate sexes) and reproduces via external fertilization, producing egg capsules that develop into free‑swimming trochophore larvae before settling as juveniles.
  • Venom: The venom contains conotoxins, peptide compounds of pharmacological interest. Although the sting of C. gradatus is less hazardous to humans than that of some larger cone species, handling live specimens is discouraged.

Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Conus gradatus, and there are no specific conservation measures known for this species. It is not listed under CITES. Current population trends are considered stable, but habitat degradation could pose localized threats.
