Constant van Crombrugghe (23 May 1798 – 24 February 1865) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest and religious founder, noted for establishing two congregations dedicated to education and the Christian formation of youth: the Sisters of the Holy Family of Leuven and the Brothers of the Holy Family.
Early life and education
Born in Laarne, near Ghent in the Austrian Netherlands (present‑day Belgium), van Crombrugghe entered the seminary at a young age. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1824 after completing his theological studies at the University of Leuven.
Foundations of religious institutes
-
Sisters of the Holy Family of Leuven (1840) – Responding to a perceived need for Catholic education for girls, van Crombrugghe founded this female religious congregation in 1840. The Sisters established a network of schools throughout Belgium and later expanded to other continents, including missions in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
-
Brothers of the Holy Family (1844) – Four years later, van Crombrugghe founded a male counterpart to address the education of boys and the instruction of lay teachers. The Brothers staffed numerous primary and secondary schools, many of which were incorporated into the public school system under state‑church agreements in the 19th‑century Belgian educational reforms.
Educational work and legacy
Through both congregations, van Crombrugghe pioneered modern pedagogical methods for the period, emphasizing moral formation, literacy, and practical skills. By the time of his death, the two institutes operated dozens of schools in Belgium and had begun missionary activity in the Netherlands, France, and the former United Kingdom colonies.
The congregations he founded continue to exist today, managing schools, social‑service centers, and charitable institutions. Several Belgian towns retain streets and public buildings named after van Crombrugghe in recognition of his contributions to Catholic education.
