Definition
Conny Vandenbos (1937 – 2002) was a Dutch pop and Schlager singer who achieved considerable commercial success in the Netherlands and Belgium from the late 1950s through the 1990s.
Overview
Born Jacoba Maria van der Vorst on 21 February 1937 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, she began her musical career in the late 1950s, initially performing in cafés and television shows. Adopting the stage name “Conny Vandenbos,” she released her first single in 1959. Over the next four decades she recorded more than 30 albums and scored a series of hit singles, such as “Een beetje” (1965), “De 13e winter” (1975), “De stilte van de zee” (1976), and “Voor het eerst” (1984). Vandenbos was known for her clear, emotive vocal style and for interpreting both original Dutch songs and adaptations of international hits. She maintained a stable presence on Dutch television and in live concert tours until her retirement in the early 2000s. Vandenbos died on 29 February 2002 in Scheveningen, Netherlands, after a long illness.
Etymology/Origin
The stage name “Conny” is a diminutive of “Cornelia,” a common Dutch female given name, though the singer’s birth name was Jacoba. “Vandenbos” is a Dutch surname meaning “from the forest” (from van den bos). The choice of a more internationally sounding surname likely aimed to broaden her appeal beyond the Dutch market.
