Cominco

Cominco was the former name of Teck Resources Limited, a Canadian mining company. The name "Cominco" was an abbreviation of "Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited."

Founded in 1906 through the amalgamation of several companies, Cominco initially focused on mining and smelting operations in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, particularly at the Sullivan Mine in Kimberley. The Sullivan Mine was a major source of lead, zinc, and silver for several decades.

Over the years, Cominco expanded its operations globally, diversifying into various mining and mineral processing activities including copper, coal, and fertilizers. The company also invested in exploration and development projects in multiple countries.

In 2001, Cominco merged with Teck Corporation to form Teck Cominco. In 2009, the company rebranded itself as Teck Resources Limited, retiring the Cominco name. Though the corporate name no longer exists, the legacy of Cominco and its historical significance in Canadian mining remains. The name is still occasionally invoked in reference to the areas and infrastructure around former Cominco operations.
