Colinas is a municipality located in the state of Maranhão in the Northeast Region of Brazil. It is situated approximately 75 km south of the state capital, São Luís, and lies within the Médio-Maranhão mesoregion. The municipality covers an area of about 1,037 km² (400 sq mi) and has an elevation of roughly 265 meters (870 feet) above sea level.

Population
According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) estimates for 2022, Colinas had a population of approximately 39,800 inhabitants, resulting in a population density of around 38 inhabitants per km².
History
The origin of the settlement dates to the early 20th century, when the expansion of agricultural activities and the construction of regional roadways promoted the development of small communities in the interior of Maranhão. The municipality was officially created by state law on 20 December 1952, separating from the municipality of São Luís.
Economy
Colinas’ economy is primarily based on agriculture and livestock. Main agricultural products include rice, beans, corn, and cassava. Cattle ranching, particularly for beef production, is a significant activity. Small-scale commerce and public services also contribute to the local economy.
Infrastructure
- Transportation: The municipality is served by state highways that link it to São Luís and other surrounding towns. Public transportation consists mainly of intercity bus services.

Colinas lies within the tropical savanna climate zone (Aw according to Köppen classification), characterized by a distinct wet season from December to May and a dry season from June to November. Average annual precipitation is about 1,600 mm, and mean temperatures range from 22 °C (72 °F) in the coolest months to 28 °C (82 °F) in the warmest.
Cultural aspects
The municipality celebrates traditional festivals linked to Catholic religious observances, such as the feast of Saint John the Baptist, as well as regional cultural events featuring local music (e.g., zabumba and forró) and folk dance.
