Colentina (river)

Definition
The Colentina is a left‑bank tributary of the Dâmbovița River in southern Romania.

Overview
The river originates in the hills of the Târgoviște area, near the villages of Șotânga and Doicești. It flows for approximately 101 km (63 mi) before joining the Dâmbovița near the locality of Bălăceanca. Its drainage basin covers about 643 km² (248 sq mi). The Colentina passes through a mix of rural settlements and the capital city of Bucharest, traversing the villages and towns of Călugăreni, Bălănești, Ghimpați, Ciocănești, Crevedia, Buftea, Mogoșoaia, Pantelimon and Cernica, as well as the Bucharest districts of Băneasa, Herăstrău, and Pantelimon.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Colentina” is of Romanian origin. Its precise derivation is not definitively documented; it may be related to the Romanian word colț (“corner” or “edge”) or to an older local toponym. Accurate information is not confirmed.

Characteristics

  • Length: ~101 km (63 mi).
  • Basin size: ~643 km² (248 sq mi).
  • Course: Begins in the Târgoviște hills, flows southeast, entering the Bucharest metropolitan area where it has been channelised and dammed to form a series of artificial lakes (e.g., Lake Herăstrău, Lake Floreasca, Lake Tei, Lake Pantelimon). These lakes serve recreational, flood‑control, and ecological functions.
  • Hydrology: As a left tributary, the Colentina contributes to the flow of the Dâmbovița, which ultimately drains into the Argeș River and then the Danube. Seasonal variations in discharge are typical for low‑land Romanian rivers, with higher flows in spring due to snowmelt and precipitation.
  • Environmental aspects: Urban sections of the river have undergone significant modification, including concrete embankments and water‑level regulation. Water quality is impacted by urban runoff and wastewater, prompting ongoing monitoring and remediation efforts by Romanian environmental authorities.
